Elope in Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Icelanders call Snæfellsnes "Iceland in miniature": in a two-hour arc you pass lava fields, golden and black beaches, seal colonies at Ytri Tunga, the sea cliffs and stone arch at Arnarstapi, the tiny black church at Búðir, and Kirkjufell — probably the most photographed mountain in the country. The glacier-topped volcano at the peninsula's tip gave Jules Verne his entrance to the centre of the earth.

For elopements, the draw is the ratio of drama to crowds. Snæfellsnes sits about two to two and a half hours north of Reykjavík, which filters out most day-trip tourism that concentrates on the south coast; midweek ceremonies at Búðakirkja or Arnarstapi can feel close to private, especially outside July and August.

The peninsula works in every season, but winter driving over Fróðárheiði and the northern shore asks for caution and flexible timing. Couples usually base in Grundarfjörður, Stykkishólmur or the Búðir area and let one long golden evening do the photographic heavy lifting.
