Donegal & the Northwest, Ireland

On the ground

What to know before choosing the date.

Donegal and Sligo are the quieter alternative to Ireland's busiest elopement landmarks: Slieve League, Fanad Head, the Poisoned Glen, surf beaches and mountain roads with long stretches of open landscape. The trade-off for that space is distance — Donegal is a destination in its own right, not a quick add-on to Dublin.

Base close to the chosen location and keep the day geographically tight. Atlantic wind, fog and rain arrive quickly, mobile coverage can be patchy, and the final kilometres to a beach or headland are often slower than expected. Local vendors make a material difference here because they know access points and workable weather alternatives.

Many photogenic fields, ruins and coastal approaches are private or working land. Get permission, close gates and keep drones away from livestock and wildlife. Summer offers the longest light; spring and early autumn bring quieter roads but need a stronger indoor plan.
